This chair is inspired by the dining chairs designed by South Korean designer Bahk Jong Sun and featured in the movie Parasite. They are deceptively simple when you look at them, but upon closer examination there is a lot of tricky joinery that goes into them. I wanted to challenge myself and see if I could figure out how to make this interesting chair.
There are mortises and tenons all over this chair, and they go in different directions. This requires interesting orientation of the different parts. For example, because the seat has to be mortised into the front supports and into the sides of the rear uprights, the seat had to be constructed of two pieces with grain running in perpendicular directions.
You can see in the photos, that to accomplish the two-piece seat, I had to use hidden mortises and tenons to connect the seat fronts and rears in order to make the connection strong, but also to allow for some seasonal wood movement.
The final challenge was gluing up the different connection points and trying to fit all the pieces together before the glue started to dry. Yes, there was some salty language during this part of the process. I do not speak Korean so I had to swear in English.
